Academic internships or practicums provide experiential education that integrate classroom knowledge and theory with practical application and skill development in a professional setting.
Internships/practicums:
- Usually run the length or equivalent of an academic term (15 weeks)
- May be part-time or full-time
- May be paid or unpaid
- May be for-credit* or non-credit
Intern/Practicum Conditions Specific to Commonwealth University - Mansfield:
- One credit hour = 40 clock hours of supervised experience (e.g., a 6-credit internship = 240 hours/semester)
- Up to 12 credits of internship/practicum experience may count toward graduation requirements. (Note: this requirement may vary by academic department)
- *For-credit internships/practicums require approval from the student's academic department to confirm the opportunity is relevant and substantive to the student's academic learning. Students are expected to secure for-credit internships/practicums during the semester prior to the academic semester of service:
- April for fall semester
- November for spring semester
- March for summer session
Please keep this timeline in mind when seeking to fill a position.
- For approval of an internship/practicum, the sponsoring organization must provide bona fide learning objectives, and the scope of the experience must be substantial (e.g., not simply clerical work). An internship job description detailing the work the student will perform is required.

Affiliation Agreements
An Affiliation Agreement is a legal agreement between Commonwealth University of PA, your organization, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). An Affiliation Agreement between the university and your organization must be in place before you host a Commonwealth U intern.
